A First Lieutenant is an army rank equivalent to Sub Lieutenant in seniority. A First Lieutenant is typically senior to a 2nd Lieutenant and junior to a Captain. First Lieutenants are addressed by rank and name, thereafter by subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am". The rank is usually abbreviated to "1Lt." or "1LT".
